So I broke my 1" fiberglass shovel about 30" or so down the handle. I don't think I want to make a real weapon out of it, but I was thinking about wrapping it like a bat or even doing a blade on it and using the extra weight to practice proper form and power generation.

Actually, what it sounds like it might be good for, especially for you, is practicing proper body mechanics. Ultralights = no notice of poor body mechanics, 12 oz stuff = bad body mechanics feels "weird", but something a little heavier makes bad body mechanics feel painful. The thing is, all of the above is doing damage, even if you can't feel it, bad body mechanics are still bad. Calibus has a video about doing this with a steel pipe. It specifically making sure you're not fucking with your arm joints.
