So, this started out as a joke and now I'm seriously wondering...
Are reflective surfaces on shields illegal?

Depends on what you mean by reflective. Cloth: probably ok. Tape: maybe, however I'd dislike it and check it for hit since tape tends to compress. Sequins or metal: Ah hell no.

Well it's tape, hits fine (as in when you hit it). but it reflects really really well, and the sun's fury is easily directed into someone's eyes.

It's not illegal by the letter of the law, but you'd be a dick.

It's not illegal by the letter of the law, but you'd be a dick. I'm withholding judgement until I see it. Who knows, it could just be something ridiculously small that's actually reflective. I suppose it'd also depend on whether or not the thing is even going to catch any light and reflect while its being checked. If its indoors/out of sunlight, it might just be looked at as something kind of shiny on a shield and ignored.

The trick would be getting something reflective enough that's going to pass weapon's check. The rules don't say you can't do it, but what the rules require kinda exclude everything you'd normally use to do it.

1.4. Creative interpretation of the rules to gain any advantage is discouraged. These rules are intentionally sparse to allow for ease of use. The Marshal, according to these rules, and medieval foam combat precedent, settles all disputes.
1.3.5 Any fabrics with modern prints. (it isnt garb but this still applies. )
2.3. Miscellaneous Equipment includes, but is not limited to, items such as: belts, pouches, boots, and non-Armor clothing and headwear. While conferring no special rules advantage, miscellaneous equipment may be checked for combat safety and period appearance at the Marshal's discretion. The minimum non-armor clothing requirements are outlined in Appendix B.
fails all three.......

(it isnt garb but this still applies. ) How is silver a modern print? 2.3. The minimum non-armor clothing requirements are outlined in Appendix B. I don't see how this applies.

No, I get it, that it fails. The very first one would have been all it took, but I don't know what you're talking about for the other two, and if I can get a better understanding of the rules then I think I'll be a better fighter because of it.
