For this type of pattern is it better to applique one color over the other and top stich it or actually create the pattern with individual pieces of fabric?
Pro / cons of each if you could.

i did strips of equal width, sew and double stitched. 4 wide.
then cut to original width and aternated the colors and double stitched. make sure to start in the middle with step 2, and go to the end then back to middle to other end. it helps keep the corners very close. make sure to be a corner nazi, it looks great when you take your time.

Yea I think it would just look better if you did it Bo's way rather than applique.

It's going to be a spat/gaiter to cover my boots. We have a pattern that my mom found that is apparently for cloth greaves, and I'll be modifying that if it's close enough.
