So I received a hand sewing kit/box thing, for the x-mas and have discovered upon trial and research, that I cannot sew. I've tried looking for some videos and text instructions but haven't found anything that I can apparently understand. Any help?
How can I sew things together so the stitching won't come loose or break or die on me?
Thanks in adavance all!

See if you can get this book out of the library (ILL is your friend!): "Basic Sewing for Costume Construction: A Handbook" by Rebecca Cunningham (also on amazon here). It's a nice general introductory sewing guide in general, covering things like patterning, measurements, all sorts of different seams and finishes, and also has a significant hand sewing section as well. Tobin listed a bunch of recommended books on the Bel boards a while ago, including this one. I got a bunch of them out of the library, and then I wound up buying this one almost as soon as I read it. It's definitely worth a search, especially as you're starting out on sewing.

So thanks to a random happening across some instructional videos on youtube I've finally learned how to tie a proper ending knot and how to get some good stitches. Time to start hand sewing a tunic! or just modifying that shirt I already have....

There has got to be some nice woman friend of yours that has a sewing machine you could borrow.
Hand stitching an entire tunic. Wow.

Yep after an hour of hand sewing, fuck that noise. Time to set up voluntary torture time. Not really but eh...

Thrift stores are your friend. I bought my sewing machine for $30 at savers, it's metal (unlike the cheapie singers at Target), seemingly indestructible, and still has features I haven't used.

I used to suck at hand work. now i own a hand stitched kimono that looks perfect and fix my other kimonos the same way.
look fot the kimono tailoring videos on you tube and steal the way they use the running stitch. It's kind of 'wiggle the needle in a straight line' and much faster. They have a tension trick too. if you thread is breaking too much to get good tension, it's too old or too cheap, so look into quilting thread. silk thread will cost more, but it held the samurai together and is thicker, as well as much better suited for hand work.
i still hate hand sewing. but i can do it well enough to not need to fix it in the near future.
