As someone who relies on his hands to make money, I need them completely intact (as much as possible). I have been using MMA gloves for a while and find them to be good for protecting the major bones and digits of the hand, but they lack the nail/fingertip protection I need.
I recently got my thumb nail mashed at a practice while wearing the MMA gloves, so I decided to look for a little more protection. I ordered a pair of Lacrosse gloves and, while they were on thier way, I bought a pair of street hockey gloves at a local sports store. The Street hockey gloves offered full finger coverage and a little extra for my thumb. They are extremely light and comfortable with soft leather palms. The drawback is that the padding is thinner than standard MMA gloves and offers less protection - still good, but not pain-free. And I would never punch block a red with these.
The Lacrosse gloves arrived today and are a little tight - I think this has to do with the extreme amount of padding. I feel like I could punch-block a city bus and be none the worse for wear. They are a little ungainly and ugly as hell but I'm more interested in not breaking fingers or smashing/ripping off nails at this point.
I will try both and see which works the best - the other pair I will sell, if anyone is interested.
I was wondering if anyone had any experiences they could share as far as what works for them, what they do or don't like about the different alternatives that are out there.
Thanks Shep

I moved from MMA/Heavy bag gloves to straight up hokey gloves because I was having hand issues and they are by far the best protection. I can punch block multiple Killian glaive shots and barely even feel them, the only problem is it destroys hand mobility. La Crosse gloves are the next best thing, very similar padding but more articulation

LaX gloves all the way, I've never felt any pain in my hands at all since I started using them, and as zee said they have more movement in the thumb.

Where would one get these and how expensive are they? I know that Forkbeard makes them, cost I am unaware of, but I can get a quote for you if you want Shepherd. I can also look for sites that make them. Summit may also be able to help us in this regard. I know he makes Armour. I shall look for more information and post it as I find it!

So, thanks, Zee - those look cool. Though, not really cost effective. I looked into motorcycle padded gloves that look similar but do not look like they offer much in the way of serious padding. Plus, I know one thing people have had a problem with, is extra padding around the wrist causing people to take wrist strikes as "hand". Starting to like the Lax gloves alot just in trying to break them in. I saw that Samhain had removes the wrist guarding around his in order to keep that area clear to accept hits, but, to be honest I would rather leave it on to keep the wrists safe and do my best to take the hits even if it's close.
Lots of good info here - keep it coming. Another question - do you think we should have a game safety category here? It's something that is frequently on my mind and I have compiled alot of info on where to find good equipment. Just throwing it out there.

Metal gauntlets =/= legal FTFY 3.8. Prohibited Armor: 3.8.1. Rigid Metal knee or elbow Armor (cops). 3.8.2. Rigid Metal full Helmet. Partial Rigid Metal Helmet as well as full Helmet made of any other Armor materials are allowed. [glow=red,2,300]3.8.3. Rigid Metal hand Armor.[/glow]

Tails its not rigid, its because it moves (the plate shifts when you hands move) its considered articulated at least Thats what i'm told

Tails its not rigid, its because it moves (the plate shifts when you hands move) its considered articulated at least Thats what i'm told It's still rigid -enough- to fail. The only stuff that would get through would be something like chain mittens. The definition of "rigid" actually differs between gauntlets and helms as far as what is and is not permissible. Edit: And dammit, != is acceptable notation.

And dammit, != is acceptable notation. If you're a programmer, but not all of us here are, I was making a more widely accepted version you fancy bastard.
